Week one......done!

Well, we all survived the first week of school! WHOOOO! Only 175 more days left!

Academic Chemistry began their very first (but not the last!) chapter of
chemistry......matter and measurement. We covered the following
topics:

  • The scientific method

  • Definitions of matter, chemistry, element and compound

  • Differences between mixtures, solutions, compound and elements

Remember-

If it can be separated easily and is not uniform throughout = heterogeneous mixture

If it is uniform throughout but not every sample from everywhere
is the same, and can be separated by physical means (like distillation,
filtration, chromatography) = homogeneous mixture (solution)

If it is uniform throughout, every sample from everywhere is the same, cannot be separated easily, and can be separated in a chemical reaction = compound

If it is uniform throughout, every sample from everywhere is the same, cannot be separated easily, and cannot be separated in a chemical reaction = element

  • Physical and Chemical Properties

  • Intensive and Extensive Properties

  • Separation Methods (distillation, filtration and chromatography)

  • SI Units and conversions

Remember "Kiss Hector's Dad during class monday"- Just slide the decimal place in the same direction as the word the same number of times.

You will have to know the SI units for length, mass, volume, density,
amount of substance, temperature and time.

  • Precision and Accuracy
    • Precision = how often you hit the same place on the target

Accuracy= how close you are to the bulls eye

  • Significant figures

For adding/subtracting: the final result will have the same
number of decimal places as the number used in the calculation with the smallest number of decimal places

For multiplying/dividing: the final result will have the same
number of significant figures as the number used in the calculation with the least number of significant figures

  • Dimensional analysis

The key to these problems is to make sure that all of the units cancel out
except for the units of the answer you are looking for.

Chemistry II started off their week reminiscing the good times in Academic Chem. by doing some review. We then started working on Chapter 4: Aqueous Solutions and Solution Stoichiometry (I love that word!) We covered the following topics:

  • Review of significant figures
  • Review writing chemical formulas
  • Review balancing chemical equations
  • Review of Stoichiometry
  • Electrolytes
  • Metathesis reactions
  • Dissociation/Solvation
  • Writing net ionic equations

Next week, we will do a lab on writing net ionic equations and then move on to acids and bases.

Well, have a wonderful memorial day weekend! And, remember as you're doing your chem homework on a Saturday night (not going to the ABA parade), "Chemistry is good, Chemistry is great, for ___ and ___ periods, I can hardly wait!"
