Week 4 by Carisa

Today in Chemistry II, we learned all of Chapter 7. We discussed the slides that are present on the slide show and also that are in our notes. We learned of the development of the periodic table and how the elements are related to one another in columns. The periodic table has periodic trends according to the sizes of atoms and ions, ionization energy, and also electron affinity. However, there are discontinuities that mess up the trends in the periodic table. Next we talked about the properties of metal, nonmetals, and metalloids. Metals tend to be lustrous, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Nonmentals, on the other hand, are dull, brittle, and poor conductors of heat and electricity. Metalloids have properties of both metals and nonmetals. After that, we discussed allotropes, which is an element bonded to itself differently. The most stable allotrope is of Sulfur. Finally, we learned about group trends. The alkali Metals, the Alkaline Earth Metals, Halogens, and Noble Gases have characteristics that put them in the same group on the periodic table.
